I’ve spent a bit more time playing around with my Kindle Fire and GemRB. Planescape: Torment seems like it needs more work before that will be fully playable, but Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 are supposed to be very well supported. I would like to play through those, so I set them up. I played Baldur’s Gate 1 many years back, but I remember very little.

This time through I want to play as a Fighter/Mage and import the character into Baldur’s Gate 2. There is a nice mod that adds the Baldur’s Gate 1 content to the Baldur’s Gate 2 engine, and lets you play through them both. That is called Baldur’s Gate Trilogy WeiDU. I installed that. I also followed more or less exactly this post from gog.com to enhance the gameplay which includes some other mods and restores some extra content. This time around I took some screenshot with the game in 1920×1200 resolution with the original fonts, then with some large fonts (overran the content areas for the most part) and finally at 960×600 (my preferred resolution) with the droidserif font. It looks pretty good, but the font is still a bit big, and the “p” is cut off (probably it is too wide for the space allocated to it?) but still it is all very readable.

Unfortunately I have some some problems. I keep finding hard crashes when I explore around the map. They are repeatable, and I have a save game for them so I’ll try to get in touch with the GemRB community to see if they can help. My guess is that the BG2 engine with the BGT mod and the additional content plus other mods that I added just hasn’t been tested much.

So I think I will just install Baldur’s Gate 1, and the suggested mods for that, and then try again.

    I may have spoken too soon. Playing more I have been able to get farther. Sometimes I crash when entering combat, but looking at the GemRB.log, I see that there are a bunch of errors like

    [KEYImporter/ERROR]: Cannot find MOVIES/MOVIES.BIF…
    [KEYImporter/ERROR]: Cannot find DATA/AREA020A.BIF…
    [KEYImporter/ERROR]: Cannot find DATA/AREA060A.BIF…

    That is probably bad. Adding these entries to my GemRB.cfg fixed that problem:

    GamePath=C:\GOG Games\bg2
    CD1=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD2=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD3=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD4=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD5=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD6=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\

    For completeness sake, here is my entire GemRB.cfg:

    GameType=bg2
    GameName=Baldur’s Gate 2
    Width=960
    Height=600
    Bpp=32
    Fullscreen=0
    TooltipDelay=500
    GUIEnhancements = 1
    GamePath=C:\GOG Games\bg2
    CD1=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD2=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD3=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD4=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD5=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CD6=C:\GOG Games\bg2\data\
    CachePath=cache
    GemRBPath=.
    PluginsPath=./plugins
    AudioDriver=openal

    The next problem is that all new games start at level 7. That is probably related to this: http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?showtopic=17094

    So by editing clskills.2da in the override directory and changing 89000 to 1, I should be able to start at level 1. Note that the file was in the GemRB/unhardcoded/bg2/clskills.2da directory.

    That actually worked! Great! But now I have to re-roll the character on my Kindle and re-start. That’s probably ok though. It will be fun!
